Your Alma Mater: Your Final Resting Place?
Posted by on May 15, 2007
You've read about alums taking vacation and retirement homes near their universities. Now they may make their university their final resting place. Campus cemetaries are popping up at Duke, Notre Dame and the University of Virginia, providing a new source of income and loyalty for universities.
Cemetery consulting Mel Malkoff told the LA Times, "In today's mobile society, some people feel more connected to their alma mater than to their hometown. People look back on their college years and say, 'Those were the best days of my life. Why not spend eternity here?'"
Cities should start planning for these opportunities and make it easy for aging boomers to come "home" to their alma mater, in life and death.
