The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream

The 10th Anniversary Edition of Suburban Nation, The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream, was recently released and includes three new essays by the authors, Jeff Speck, Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk . Order the book here.

The new edition is receiving accolades from reporters including Paul Goldberger of The New Yorker. He says, "Duany, Plater-Zyberk and Speck set forth more clearly than anyone has done in our time the elements of good town planning."

Suburban Nation supports CEOs for Cities’ influential body of work on the economic and environmental benefits of genuine urbanism that makes a compelling case for reducing dependency on cars and improving environmental outcomes.

Our newest report, Driven Apart: How sprawl in lengthening our commutes and why misleading mobility measures are making things worse, says that compact cities are the real answer to reducing traffic delays, and our May 2008 study Driven to the Brink says homes in neighborhoods that require lengthy commutes are falling in value more than in more compact and accessible places.

CEOs for Cities is currently collaborating with Jeff Speck on a walkability book due late next year.
