New York magazine sees opportunity where most see a major problem. Office vacancy rates are soaring in Manhattan (and in many other cities), so why not turn all those cubicles into places to live? NY invited five design firms to "play along" and provide conversion plans. SO-IL suggested removing the urgly ceiling titles and hanging the furniture from the ceiling. Slade Architecture wanted to turn each floor into a city block by demolishing sections of the building and turning the perimeter of each floor into landscaped outdoor lawns. RUX had a plan to convert the men's room into the kitchen. (All it needs is a good scrub. The urinal converts to an herb garden.) Omnivore wanted to keep it simple. Just move in, was the advice.
