The Impact of Everyday Decisions

This quote reminded me that the greatest advances against climate change will be made when sustainability is factored into everyday considerations of decision-makers:

‘It can’t be a bolt-on for just one area – everybody’s got to do it. We’ve all got to wear green hats and we’ve all got to take green actions.’

In this interview, Richard Brett of Leeds City Council, UK, talks about the council’s plans to embed climate change into strategies across a range of areas, such as local development.  Their long term priorities include, “new, low-carbon communities and dramatic improvements in public transport, and the amount of walking and cycling in the city.” 

As we know from our Green Dividend research, reducing vehicle miles traveled can yield substantial economic gain for cities.  But to make those gains, we’ll need to make sure everyday decisions are working toward those goals.
