Designs for the Big Apple

Designers rose to the challenges laid out by city leaders in New York City recently, to propose some new and creative solutions.
GOOD Design NYC I and II, run by our colleagues at GOOD and co-sponsored by CEOs for Cities, celebrated the unique ways that designers can serve New York.
On the first night, Design and the City, six teams presented design solutions to improve the urban experience.
On the second night, New Ideas for New York, designers presented in 10 minutes each the solutions they had been working on for weeks in response to city challenges posed by urban leaders.
See here the solutions that emerged including iPhone apps to encourage people to ride their bicycles more, addressing the New York sewer system by selling ‘souvenirs’ to tourists, tactile way-finding integrated with urban infrastructure to guide the crowds of Times Square, redesigning signals for pedestrians, and protecting waterfront areas with floats that can double as a NASCAR track.
