The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that biking and walking trips have increased 25 percent since 2001.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is using the increase to continue his push for safe alternatives to driving.
"By making biking and walking safer and more accessible, we’ll be able to provide Americans with more choices and help foster more active, livable communities,” LaHood said in a press release from DOT.
We will also make more prosperous communities. As CEOs for Cities' Green Dividend calculations demonsrate, money that doesn't go to purchases of cars and gas is available for spending in the local economy.

As part of the Livability Initiative, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced it would be making available $280 million in 2010 for grants to streetcars, buses and other urban circulator projects. "Priority will be given to projects that connect destinations and foster the redevelopment of communities into walkable, mixed use, high-density environments." The Federal Transit Administration plans to announce grants in early 2010.
