Michigan’s Transitioning Economy
Posted by Mark Ebner on October 25, 2011
Sheri Welch of Crain's Detroit Business details how Michigan's economy continues to lag behind as they attempt to transition from an industrial-based to a knowledge-based economy. Michigan Future President, Lou Glazer, described the problem as, "an economy that was based on high-wage, low-skilled manufacturing, particularly, the auto industry." Leaders throughout the state are focused on encouraging more residents to complete their college degree. According to the American Community Survey, Michigan has 1.6 Million residents with some college but no degree and more than 500,000 with an Associates Degree. CEOs for Cities partners, Hudson-Webber Foundation, helped fund the report, "Michigan's Transition to a Knowledge-Based Economy: Third Annual Progress Report," which is available at www.michiganfuture.org.
