Environmentalism = Urbanism

A shift in the attitudes of environmentalists on cities is apparent by Berkeley's recent vote to approve increasing density in the city's center. Backed by well-respected green organizations such as Sierra Club and Greenbelt Alliance (previously People for Open Space), this measure will concentrate "housing, jobs and cultural destinations near transit, shops and amenities" to "revitalize the downtown and help make Berkeley one of the greenest cities in the United States."
The next generation of environmentalists understands that cities deliver the greenest lifestyle possible, that cities are intrinsically sustainable.
We hope they tune in for the Connectivity Challenge to be held in Chicago December 8-10 that will explore the ambition of creating a community that ensures its citizens are able to meet their daily needs without owning a car.
The passing of this ballot in Berkeley moves them one step closer to making this goal a reality.
