CEOs for Cities is a national network of urban leaders dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities.

Geography is still important, and the best evidence of that is this piece in Sunday's New York Times by Randall Stross "It's Not Who You Know. It's Where You Are."

"Meet the 20-minute rule that guides fateful decisions in Silicon Valley," Stross writes. He quotes a number of key venture capitalists who say they only fund start-ups within a 20-minute drive from their offices. Why? It's the only way v-c's can practically provide oversight and guidance.

The start-up ecology begins with money, but it doesn't end there. Technical talent is plentiful, and talent will work for equity rather than salaries. It all adds up to a virtuous cycle for the metro region labeled San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose.

V-C's scoff at video conferences and virtual meetings. Important business will always be done face-to-face, they contend.
