CEOs for Cities is a national network of urban leaders dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities.

The Michigan Prosperity Agenda is a monthly radio show that focuses on how to make Michigan communities better places to live, work and play.

The topic of the March episode was the role of talent in placemaking, and our President and CEO Carol Coletta was an invited guest. Carol conveyed to listeners the metrics we've developed around talent as part of our City Dividends research, urging Michigan communities to make college attainment a central part of their economic development goals.

Our research at CEOs for Cities suggests 58% of a city's success, measured by per capita income, is explained by the percentage of its population with a 4-year college degree.

"If you could only make one bet as a community, I would bet on education," Carol told host Dan Gilmartin, CEO of the Michigan Municipal League. "If I could make two bets, I would make the second bet on quality of place...understanding that the most educated people in our economy are also the most mobile people in our society. If you can't hold onto them in a city, you're in trouble."
