CEOs for Cities is a national network of urban leaders dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities.

In this essay, Vishaan Chakrabarti argues for an alternative policy approach for the U.S. that tackles the fundamental challenges we face in an integrated, purposeful way with dense urban living at the heart of it.

He imagines leaders promoting “time-tested ideas of density and mass transportation, of cities using far less energy per capita” to generate a new landscape of “green, healthy, prosperous urbanity.”

“Imagine [our leaders] said ‘America, we have a silver bullet. We are going to rebuild this country. We are going to build a new national landscape, and in the process we are going to create jobs, build an innovation economy, rein in health care costs, lower our dependence on foreign oil, and lead the planet to sustainability. We are going to do this with one fell swoop, with one big idea, called the American Smart Infrastructure Act. (ASIA).’”
