CEOs for Cities is a national network of urban leaders dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities.

This message came this morning from Mr. Peter Ong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore, who is on a world tour of global cities.

"Carol

Seattle is interesting.  People come here first without a job because they
have first decided it is a nice place to live in.  Even when Boeing went
through restructuring in the 70s, a large number of executives stayed back
in Seattle to figure out what to do.  Invariably, they did end up doing
something.

This is the power of highly liveable cities.  In good times and bad, smart
people find reasons to be there."

The same is true of Portland.  Althrough unemployment is quite high there now, young people in particular continue moving to Portland.

The power of liveability has essentially flipped the old equation of people following jobs.  The evidence is everywhere.
