The Heart of a City's Thinking
May 30, 2009
Posted by: Carol
SPUR, the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, is being celebrated as "the city's premier think tank" upon the opening of its new, very public building on Mission in the heart of San Francisco. Its aspiration is to the be the public hub of planning and policy work for the city. But its most remarkable achievement is to bring such a wide range of the community together to talk reasonably and thoughtfully about the thorny planning issues that challenge any growing city.
The range of issues SPUR tackles includes Community Planning, Disaster Planning, Economic Development, Good Government, Housing, Regional Planning, Sustainable Development, and Transportation. SPUR's magazine, Urbanist, is a standout. (Especially recommend the recent issue on Downtown.)
I was there for the opening party this week and was struck by how much support for SPUR reflects love of San Francisco and ambition for its future. SPUR gives focus to that ambition and informs it with research and conversation.
