CEOs for Cities is a national network of urban leaders dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities.

Residents of Vauban, Germany, "are suburban pioneers, going where few soccer moms or commuting executives have ever gone before: they have given up their cars."  Cars are forbidden on most of Vauban's streets, and houses cannot have driveways or garages.

Specht reports that street parking, driveways and home garages are generally forbidden and the streets are completely “car-free” — except the main thoroughfare.  As a result, 70 percent of Vauban’s families do not own cars, and 57 percent sold a car to move here.

Specht caught this quote from one of Vauban's satisfied citizens:  “When I had a car I was always tense. I’m much happier this way,”
