Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin suggests that Chicago could set a smart example for an energy-mad world with its bid for the Olympics. He calls for a green Olympics and, with Skidmore Owings & Merrill's chief planner Phil Enquist proposes an interesting package of green strategies:

* Harness the energy of the Olympics to improve transit so that more people travel by train and bus. (Fifty-three percent of Chicago's daily commuters use transit to get to the city.) Add dedicated bus lanes on east-west Loop streets.

* Build a "demountable" stadium. They imagine a "kit of parts" modeled on the work of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.

* Reward the suburban cities with dense walkable downtowns with Olympics facilities and upgrade the commuter rail stations of those suburbs.
