CEOs for Cities is a national network of urban leaders dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities.

Why fund arts and culture? That is question tackled by Michele and Robert Root-Bernstein in this compelling argument, where they challenge us to imagine the results of not having these “luxuries”.

Have a look at the wealth of examples that emerge when they see “what happens when we start throwing out all the science and technology that the arts have made possible,” from cell phones to computer chips, medical stitching, penicillin and pacemakers, to bridges and the telephone.

Bottom line: “The fact is that the arts foster innovation...Hobble the arts and you hobble innovation.”

As the authors suggest, an important part of the economic stimulus perhaps?
