The front page of yesterday's recently redesigned Chicago Tribune had no news stories -- just huge headlines and big graphics.  It's the first time I've seen that happen on the front page of a daily newspaper.  Faced with declining readership of the print product, daily newspapers are trying all sorts of things to lure new readers.  But the risk, of course, is that they drive current readers away.

Then again, the magazine business appears to be far more robust than newspapers, and they have no stories on their covers either.  Just headlines and teasers.  But if newspapers want to be magazines -- not the worst idea I've ever heard -- then why not really redesign their print product to look fabulous, to stand out on the shelf?  Too many local newspapers, critical to the mix of great cities,  seem to be trying to occupy some strange middle ground that just doesn't work for me.  I hope they get it right before it's too late.
