Wow! Minneapolis Looks Great
October 10, 2008
Posted by: Carol
What a difference 17,000 Target employees have made to downtown Minneapolis. On a perfect day, I had an opportunity to visit Target's headquarters on Nicollet Mall. There was a busy flow of casually dressed people (average age looked to be maybe 26? 28? young), giving these corporate headquarters an unmistakeable vibrancy.
It was a special pleasure to hear about Target's investment in civic activism for its team members. Target is encouraging its people to become election officials and poll workers (the first place I remember volunteering in elections), to speak their minds on political issues and to get involved in the process.
From the top floors of Target, I could look north to the IDS Center that once stood out like a lone beacon on the skyline, telegraphing the city's ambitions for its downtown. Now, is it joined by many other towers, a much more exciting pedestrian/transit mall at street level, lots of warehouse housing, the fabulous new Guthrie Theater, and a new stadium underway. I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer, but I intend to go back soon. (And congratulations to Target for having the foresight to put its headquarters downtown.)
