Connected Urban Development
September 30, 2008
Posted by: Carol
Cisco is promoting a concept called "Connected Urban Development" in partnership with cities to cut traffic congestion and reduce C02 by deploying innovative connected network solutions. The program initially involved three pilot cities: San Francisco, Amsterdam and Seoul. According to the Financial Times, "these were selected because each possessed or planned to implement a next-generation broadband infrastructure, had buoyant technology sectors, significant traffic congestion issues, and visionary leadership. Since then, Madrid, Lisbon, Hamburg and Birmingham have also signed up.
"San Francisco is implementing among other projects the Connected Bus, a landmark prototype for green transportation that was developed by Cisco and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA). The bus includes wireless hotspots, a Global Positioning System (GPS) giving commuters updated status of bus routes and connections, displays providing information on emissions and automated engine management. If deployed broadly throughout transit systems, the Connected Bus could significantly reduce carbon emissions in cities around the world"
Cisco plans to use the system to do more than manage public transportation. It can also be used to:
- Deliver services to residents
- Manage the flow of traffic
- Use and manage real estate resources
Launched in 2006, CUD is a 5-year program, in which Cisco has invested US$15 million in people, research, and equipment to help create a global community of cities committed to addressing environmental sustainability.

It seems to be a great idea. There“s so much to do related to intelligent transport; however, technology is just one of the multiple variables to manage transportation systems, as human behaviour has a lot of things to say, too.
