The Cascade Agenda
September 28, 2008
Posted by: Carol
I was in Seattle this week to open the Design for Livability forum. One of its sponsors was the Cascade Land Conservancy, Washington’s largest independent land conservation and stewardship organization. What makes CLC so exciting is that it connects preservation of natural land to livable cities. Without livable cities, we won't be able to preserve the land.
CLC has developed a Cascade Agenda for Cities.
Cascade Agenda Cities Are Complete, Compact and Connected:
Complete---Urban Neighborhoods have a vibrant mix of people, public gathering spaces, civic and cultural anchors, and retail establishments.
Compact---New development is designed to make neighborhoods efficient, walkable and affordable.
Connected---Residents can use transit, walk and bike safely to daily destinations. Communities have links between open space and urban areas, allowing residents to have access to waterfronts, parks and trails.
It is so encouraging to see joined up agendas between conservationists and environmentalists and architects and urban advocates. Theirs is a model for all of us.
