Don't Diss Starbucks
July 24, 2008
Posted by: Kristian
Don't diss Starbucks. Instead, note its importance as a symbol of renewal, normality and as a gathering spot -- a place that unconnected people gathered, met and shared ideas.
This New York Times article talks about the closing of a Starbucks in Newark, and how residents are reacting (not well). Clearly, they are losing more than just a coffee shop. Reactions range from “It’s the only nice place on this street,” to “I was shocked that with the revitalization, with the face-lift here, they would remove the Starbucks.” A deputy to Mayor Booker even contacted Starbucks asking them to reconsider.
