Will Transport Costs Bring Jobs Back?
June 15, 2008
Posted by: Carol
Interesting front page story in Wall Street Journal Friday asserts that the rising costs of shipping will force some manufacturers to bring production back to North America. The cost of shipping a standard, 40-foot container from Asia to the East Coast has tripled since 2000 and will double again as oil prices head to $200 a barrel. "In a world of triple-digit oil prices, distance costs money," Jeff Rubin, chief economist at CIBC World Markets told WSJ.
When savings on overseas manufacturing fall to far less than 15 percent, it gets harder to justify having the work done in distant Chinese factories that take 12 weeks to deliver product, according to the piece.
