Investing in Miami's Future
May 18, 2008

Mayor Manny Diaz gave his State of the City address last month, and it had a number of important ideas.
He told the people of Miami, "We have entered a new economic era where information flows freely across the globe. Because information flattens the world, the role of ciites has become more important than ever -- cities give us a sense of place. Cities are now defined by what makes them unique and are the focal point for human interaction and opportunity. Cities must function as incubators of the knowledge-based businesses driving the new economy...
"The single most important factor in attracting young workers is not what they will do, but where they will do it."
Miami has emerged as a global city. "We are the point of translation," he said. "This nation's most diverse city has opened its arms to the world, and the world has come to us...
"Like in business, a city must continually re-invent itself. It must plan, innovate, lead and change."
Diaz noted two important programs he has begun. One is "Elevate Miami." Its purpose is to to prepare all citizens and businesses of Miami for a leadership position in the global economy. The program establishes public and private partnerships which facilitate affordable technology including mobile and low-cost internet access, elevated employability skills, and expanded economic opportunities for all participants.
The other is ACCESS Miami, a next step anti-poverty program.
The mayor also spoke eloquently about the importance of art in the lives of great cities. "Art is one of the few areas of civic life with low barriers to entry," he said, "it builds ties between neighbors and communities. Art is essential to the human spirit. It is our connection to one another."
