I'm jealous. Starting next month, people in D.C. can rent a bicycle "day and night with the swipe of a membership card." Operating like ZipCar, SmartBike DC, a new public-private venture, will make 120 bicycles available at 10 spots in central locations in the city. Members will pay $40 for an annual membership and apparently no fee for use. The deal is supported by a deal giving Clear Channel exclusive advertising rights to the city's bus shelters. Let's hope this works and hope that it spreads.
