The price of gas isn't the only thing affecting road traffic patterns in the U.S. Over the next two decades, 20 million baby boomers will leave the workplace. As many as 70% are likely to start new businesses from home or small offices near home. This means a big chunk of former commuters will be doing more around-town driving and using roads at off-peak times. And it's not like boomers are the only ones working from home these days! There are plenty of examples of virtual offices occupied by a cross-generational group of people. Without good data on how people will be working in the future, planning for the effect it will have on cities is a murky proposition. Cities would do well to understand these trends carefully.
