Arts investing in arts to subsidize arts
February 19, 2008
Posted by: Carol
As cultural organizations continue the battle to find ways of funding and supporting quality programs, the entrepreneurial spark is generating innovative alternatives to the traditional funding routes. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is building a new outdoor amphitheatre in Encore Park to host a variety of rock concerts, Broadway musicals and other events. “So why is Encore Park being built?†Terry Teachout asks in his article, When Lowbrows Subsidize Highbrows. According to Don Fox, ASO’s Chief Financial Officer, it is “a revenue-generating exercise†that will generate profits and the discretionary funding that is so hard to come by in the arts will be used to fund the Symphony’s activities and reduce its debt. How this strategy fares will take time to tell, but new models for funding cultural programs and ways of establishing greater independence or control of funding routes is something that is certainly ripe for exploration.
