Social Networking for Cities
October 24, 2007
Posted by: Carol
As I was editing transcripts from our fabulous CEOs for Cities National Meeting panel of Tara Lemmey, Robin Chase and Sean Safford on networking, I decided to pause and check out LifeAt.com. It puts a local spin on social networking with password-protected web sites for apartment buildings and housing developments, allowing residents to post photos and profiles, share info about favorites places in the neighborhoods and complain about building services. As a condo dweller, I'd be all over this. The fee to join seems steep -- $6000 one-time from buildings -- but it seems like a great way for neighbors to share all sorts of things, including unused capacity (services, infrequently used capital equipment such as ladders, ride sharing), a major theme of our panelists.

Would you use LifeAt if it was in your building?

There is a website that launched recently called Neighborology (http://neighborology.com) that offers everything that lifeat.com offers and more for free. Not only do they make it possible to connect to your nearest neighbors but they also make it possible to connect in a larger community (your region).
