Now that we've been sold the idea that it is unAmerican to rent rather than own a home, the battle lines are being drawn as homes intended for sale turn into rentals. Owners in gated communities and condo projects especially are worried that they can't keep up with renters' comings and goings and that renters don't have the same incentive to maintain their property.

What seems far worse is owners unable to afford the upkeep of their property because they are in over their heads or who lose their property altogether leaving vacant property behind. Add overbuilding to the mix, and it leaves both homeowners and renters in a fix. Rather than demonizing renters, owners ought to seek out the interests they have in common with renters to strengthen communities.

Also what is forgotten between this renters vs owners arguement is that ownership reduces mobility and therefore can during times of economic downturn make it difficult for people to relocate to where the jobs are. Whereas renters can more easily move to where the work is.
