Blank walls and deserted lots are one of the most recognizable signs of change in neighborhoods. In some instances, empty lots remain abandoned and unused for years. A current project facilitated by the Neighbor’s Project, New Life for Dead Spaces, encourages community members to be creative:

If you see an empty lot, find out who owns it and organize a neighborhood clean-up and turn it into a functional neighborhood place.

Community members in Braddock, near Pittsburgh, are doing just that. An article in PopCity highlights the city's commitment to urban ecology by transforming unused lots into communal gardens, creating new green-collared jobs, and promoting Edible Schoolyards.
