Cities as Conversation Incubators

In a New York Times op-ed, David Brooks discussed the role that cities play in spreading ideas. Brooks recognized the importance of cities in solving problems and in promoting small businesses because “they host quality conversations, not because they have new buildings and convention centers.” Cities serve as a hotbed of innovation as they “clump together different sorts of skilled people and force them to rub against one another,” breeding creativity and growth.  Brooks’ argument for the success of cities is rooted in Ed Glaeser’s newest book, The Triumph of Cities.  The book, which is releasing on February 10th, should be moved to the top of urban enthusiasts’ must read lists.
