ArtPrize Promotes Distinctive City Identity

ArtPrize, Grand Rapids' public art competition, is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Grand Rapids is one of 51 communities nationwide to receive an Our Town Grant, which aims to invest money in public-private partnerships that strengthen the arts. ArtPrize, the world's largest art prize, transforms downtown Grand Rapids into a public art gallery by inviting artists to turn any property within a 3-mile radius into a venue and asking the general public to vote on the winner. This innovative contest is a form of creative placemaking and an excellent example of a community "investing in arts and smart design to enhance Americans' quality of life."
