Adaptation at work

Through the pain of the economy, it’s nice to see a positive in the efforts to reduce VMT.  Bike sales in Australia are up 38% for 2008, making it the ninth consecutive year demand for bikes has outstripped vehicles according to this article.

Elliot Fishman, advisor to the Cycling Promotion Fund, attributes the increased interest in cycling to "the sluggish economy, coupled with concern over climate change, health, congestion and petrol prices".

And those who bought bikes are also putting them to greater use.

“Helping to create bicycle-friendly cities is one of the most effective measures the federal government can take to help Australians fight climate change, the obesity epidemic, congestion and make our cities more liveable.”
